Community Service
Community service is so satisfying: It builds character, brings out the best in people, makes friends out of strangers, reminds us that people of all ages and backgrounds have something they can contribute, and is proof that when we join forces and work shoulder to shoulder, we can accomplish great things in our neighborhoods and the world.

I was excited to join with hundreds of volunteers in August 2009 to help build a new playground for Laurel Elementary School. Project coordinator Eileen Collins organized the equivalent of an old-fashioned barn raising in which individuals, businesses, church and school groups, elected officials and the city of Laurel worked together to build, install and mulch two play areas. -
I am a proud supporter of Side by Side, a new initiative to support families of public school students in Laurel. At its first parent workshop in September 2009, I served alongside members of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Group to dish out pizza and salad to kids and parents. The turnout was great and the event, the first of four such workshops scheduled for the 2009-2010 school year, earned widespread praise and positive coverage in local newspapers as well as the Washington Post. -
I participated in an Earth Day cleanup of Indian Creek in Beltsville, which was sponsored by Konterra. Volunteers removed everything from household trash to tires to furniture, even a kitchen sink!
