I am a candidate for Prince George's County Council, District 1, representing the communities of Adelphi, Beltsville, Calverton, College Park, Laurel, Montpelier, South Laurel, Vansville and West Laurel.

My Priorities

You don't have to be a Democrat to support my candidacy. I have worked in the Laurel community for 20 years as a citizen activist, public education advocate, community leader and champion of good government. I've spent the past six and a half years working to make county and state government better for you. My platform issues will be:
 
1. Promoting common sense commercial and residential development that is centered around Metrorail stations and other areas where adequate public facilities already exist -- roads, water and sewer, schools, police and fire service -- and that emphasizes green building standards (green rooftops, geothermal heat, waterless toilets, etc.).
 
2. Keeping what works in public education like parent liaisons in every building, strengthening ties between neighborhoods, businesses, the faith community and under-performing schools (an exciting collaboration between schools and churches is being launched by the Laurel Clergy Association and, no, this does not pose a threat to church/state separation), and trying to keep turnover at the superintendent level and among classroom teachers as low as possible with competitive pay and a safe work environment.
 
3. Preserving TRIM and controlling spending, making difficult choices about some levels of service, freezing hiring for non-essential personnel, but also expanding our revenue sources with more high wage jobs and private companies that add to the tax base.
 
4. Advocating transparency, accountability and responsiveness in government. Making sure agencies and services and programs meet your needs and expectations.
